Do it for the Safety or Do it for the Savings – Just Do It!
When shopping for winter tires, it is important to look for a tire that displays the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake Symbol (Also referred to as the ‘Alpine” symbol) on the sidewall. Transport Canada acknowledges that tires displaying this symbol meet the specific snow traction performance requirements, and have been designed specifically for use in severe snow conditions.
A simple google search of “winter tire effectiveness” will give you all kinds of information as to the safety reasons for installing a full set of winter tires from November to April each year. There are also lots of articles about why all-season tires are a real safety compromise compared to winter tires designed specifically for use in severe snow conditions. A great place to start your research is on the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada website. Feel free to research further, but from everything I can see, there is no argument that in climates such as the one we battle here in Ottawa, Toronto, and throughout Ontario – winter tires are much safer.
Tires are expensive, but an investment in you and your family’s safety is a worthwhile one. Now, a discount on your auto insurance should help those that make the right choice.
Up until recently there were only a few insurance companies offering discounts for winter tire use. This discount, along with coverage offerings and other pricing factors has always been what we look at and compare for our clients. Now we are starting to see the release of new discounts on many more of the insurance products available to our clients. Most offerings are available either late this year or early in 2016. There are certain conditions prior to receiving the discount and quite often these conditions are different from one company to another, so call your Rhodes & Williams Insurance Broker to see if we can help you save on your car insurance. Also watch this website as we will post more information as it becomes available – keeping our clients informed.
So, no matter your reasoning – for the safety or for the insurance savings – protect yourself and use winter tires.
