Simple Tips for your Spring Home Maintenance

Spring is in the Air

It is a great time to start addressing some basic home maintenance to keep your property in good shape and avoid any costly damages that may or may not be covered under your insurance.

Here are few things to consider:

  • Roof.
Now that the snow has melted, it is a good time to carefully inspect your roof and look for any missing, broken, or worn shingles. Don’t forget to also check underneath those shingles for any soft spots which could mean there is rotting wood. Although most insurance policies cover roof damage, there are can be limitations when it comes to deterioration if the damage is a result of wear and tear or neglect.
  • Attic.
While you are up there you might as well check your attic. Your attic is a good spot for critters to nest during those cold months. If you spot any critters or nests, call an expert. Unfortunately, many insurance policies will not cover any losses or damages caused by rodents.
  • Foundation
Doesn’t it feel nice to be outside again? Now is the time to walk around your house and look for any cracks in the foundation. These cracks can lead to water, soil, and insects getting inside. If you find any cracks, call a professional. If left unattended these cracks tend to accumulate. Did you know many insurance policies do not cover leakage from a crack in your foundation? It’s also good to check your downspouts to make sure they aren’t blocked with ice or debris, and to make sure they are directing the water away from your foundation.
  • Check your A/C unit
The harsh winter temperatures can be tough on your outdoor equipment. If you have covered your unit over the winter months, now is a good time to remove the cover and brush away any debris that may have blown against the coil. Also take a look at the panels. If you notice any missing or misaligned panels, you should call a professional to assess your a/c unit before you start it up for the season.

Now that this checklist is complete, its time to sit back and enjoy the warm weather!
